global energy 2020 7The Global Energy Association (registered in Moscow and responsible for the international prize of the same name) has created a new award specifically for Russian academics – to be presented for their contributions to the development of energy in the country: The Honorary Diploma of the Association.

The award was presented today for the first time to a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, doctor of mathematical physics, Professor Viktor Maslov “for his fundamental scientific contribution to upholding the safety of nuclear power”.

On behalf of the association, the diploma was presented by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak.

“This is a new step in the development of this prize – intended to honour veterans of the sector who serve as an example to young academics,” Novak said at the presentation ceremony.

“The intention was to award this honorary diploma to you, its first holder, for your fundamental contribution to the development of energy and for improved standards of energy safety. We know full well the role that you have played in developing our energy networks and in resolving the problems of the Chernobyl nuclear power station.”

In his reply, Viktor Maslov described the award as a great honour and noted with pleasure that a new generation of young academics had emerged in Russia able to carry the baton once held by his own generation.

Sergey Brilev, President of the Global Energy Association, told at the ceremony: “This prize is a worthy development on its own. There are now new, younger laureates. But you are the very foundation. Without your work, there would be no means for the young people to record their achievements.”

The association also announced that the awarding of the 2020 diploma also included a prize of 1 million roubles ($13,300) taken from funds that the new management of Global Energy had saved over the course of the financial year.

The award ceremony took place at the academician’s dacha, or country house, and all current health norms were fully observed. Also in attendance was Yaroslav Kuzmimov, Rector of the Higher School of Economics. He gave special thanks to academician Maslov – who celebrated his 90th birthday this year – for continuing to work actively as a professor and researcher at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Moscow institute of Electronics and Mathematics, National Research University, Higher School of Economics.

Viktor Maslov is a specialist in the field of mathematical physics, functional analysis and the theory of differential equations in partial derivatives, mechanics and quantum physics. He has made major contributions to the development of mathematics and mathematical bases of contemporary thermodynamics. A series of terms have been named after him, among them the Maslov Index, Maslov class and Maslov dequantisation. One of Russia’s leading schools of mathematics was founded under his leadership. Maslov has written and co-written more than 600 published scientific works and is the recipient of many different prizes and government awards.
