The 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme for specialists from developing countries and countries in transition has been successfully conducted from 5th to 30th of October 2015. The highly skilled specialists in the amount of 19 international fellows from Belarus, Brazil, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, Kirghizstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Zimbabwe took part in the ninth session.

The main subject of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme related to “Effective use of energy resources” and devoted to the topical issues within the framework of the programme, such as energy saving, renewable energy, environment protection and development of cooperation in the energy field. The curriculum consisted of 118 academic hours of practical and theoretical classes.

Information and communication technologies (ICT) were used in the framework of the Fellowships Programme as well. The experts from the Northern (Arctic) Federal University and St. Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers conducted online lectures and webinars with appliances of modern computer programmes.

The educational process of the 9th session was led by experienced lecturers and experts from Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Joint Institute for High Temperatures of Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow Energy Institute, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Center for International Industrial Cooperation, Northern (Arctic) Federal University, St. Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers and Moscow State University of Civil Engineering.

During the 9th session international fellows visited various higher educational, scientific and research institutions and also Russian and international events (Expo, Congress, etc.), in particular, Moscow State University of Engineering Ecology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Energy Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ERIRAS), Moscow Energy Institute, Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification faculties at Russian Scientific Research Institute of Rural Electrification, Moscow Ecological Center, Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, International Conference and Exhibition “City Energy and Urban Planning, International Conference and Exhibition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers “RO&G SPE”; International Congress for Renewable Energy “Reencon-XXI” and International Forum for Innovative Development “Open Innovations”.

In the end of the course fellows were awarded with certificates and diplomas of successful completion of the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme.

• ISEDC focuses attention on effective use of energy resources in the framework of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme

  On October 6, 2015 the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme for specialists from developing countries and countries in transition officially started up at the premises of Ecological Faculty of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).
  
  The programme will be held from 5th to 30th October 2015. This year 19 young specialists from all over the world participate in the IX session, including fellows from Belarus, Brazil, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, Kirghizstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Thailand, Turkey and Zimbabwe.

  The 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme  was officially opened by Mr. Yury Posysaev, ISEDC Executive Director, and Mr. Aleksandr Antonov, Chief of ISEDC Educational Sector, along with colleagues from Ecological Faculty of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Mrs. Olga Rodionova, Faculty Study Director, and Dr. Margarita Redina, Applied Ecology Chairman.

  Mrs. Rodionova welcomed the participants on behalf of the Dean of Ecological Faculty. Dr. Redina familiarized fellows with the schedule of educational programme and shared interesting aspects of the study process.

  "The issues related to human capacity building in the field of renewable energy, sustainable energy development and environmental management of energy resources are in the top priority to UNESCO and ISEDC", as was mentioned by Mr. Posysaev in his welcoming remarks towars participants. He also noted that "it is necessary that scientific ideas must be inspired by not just the desire to improve the world, but to save it, save the environment, biological and cultural diversity, natural resources of our planet for future generations". Mr. Antonov expressed his hope that all participants of the fellowships programme will be able to use and share their knowledge, developments and scientific ideas. "I am sure that during this month you will work together as one team in order to gain new knowledge, which will be used in your future scientific and practical activities", he mentioned.

  The educational process of the 9th session will be led by experienced lecturers from Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, and also by invited experts from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Joint Institute for High Temperatures of Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow Energy Institute, Moscow State University, Center for International Industrial Cooperation of UNIDO in the Russian Federation and other organizations.

  During the programme fellows will make reports on the situation and prospects of energy development in their countries, record video appeals to all future participants of the fellowships programme and present their courseworks.

• The results of the 2nd week of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme

  During the second week (October 12-16) of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme the fellows visited various lectures and seminars, participated in professional discussions with lecturers and students of the Ecological Faculty of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
  
  The curriculum agenda was devoted to the problems of modern society, in particular to the topical issues, such as "Global climate change", "Low-carbon development", "Energy poverty" and "Environmental safety". 

  On October 16, the participants of the IX session of the programme accompanied by Alexander Antonov, ISEDC Chief sector of educational activities, and Mikhail Lyalin, ISEDC expert on energy efficiency and renewable energy, visited the Museum of Earth Sciences at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

  The museum expositions reveal the history of the development of scientific knowledge and the content of different scientific ideas. The installations show the latest achievements of scientific thoughts in the field of earth sciences, relationships between living and nonliving in nature, formation of the modern nature and human activity in this area.

  In the upcoming third week of the programme it is planned to conduct online lectures and webinars with experts from the Northern (Arctic) Federal University (SAFU) and St. Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers (Spb GTURP), as well as to arrange an online tour around educational and scientific center on energy innovation at SAFU.

  In addition, ISEDC will be visited by the project manager of the UNDP/GEF project "Building energy efficiency in the North West of Russia" Mr Vitaly Becker and the project consultant Mr Andrey Dadonov. Also, the UNDP TV crew of the project will visit International Sustainable Energy Development Centre in order to prepare a video film about the implementation process of the educational programme.

  On the 22nd and 23rd of October 2015, a few visits to educational higher institutions are scheduled according to the programme’s timetable, in particular visits to All-Russian Research Institute for Electrification of Agriculture and Moscow State Construction University. During the excursions fellows will be able to see experimental laboratories and become familiar with innovative developments of Russian scientists.

• Outcomes of the 3rd week of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme

  During the third week (October 19-23) of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme the fellows visited experimental laboratories of the leading Russian research and scientific institutions and participated in educational seminars and online conferences.
  
  On October 19, fellows participated in a scientific seminar held by the Joint Institute for High Temperatures (JIHT) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

  During the seminar students were acquainted with the advanced technologies of solid-phase hydrogen storage, learnt about other innovative developments made by leading JIHT’s experts. During visits to the laboratories of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures, experts acquainted fellows with the specifics of the experiments conducted in the laboratories of hydrogen energy technologies and demonstrated experimental developments of laser technology for the audience.

  On October 20 and 21, the ISEDC held online lectures and webinars with experts from the Northern (Arctic) Federal University and St. Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers. International fellows actively participated in online classes and discussed topical issues related to the use of alternative energy sources at the national and industrial levels.

  On October 21, the experts of the UNDP/GEF Project "Building energy efficiency in the North-West of Russia", Project Manager Mr. Vitaly Bekker, Project Consultant Mr. Andrey Dodonov and Project Assistant Ms. Maria Lukina-Lebedeva visited International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO. The experts of the UNDP/GEF Project participated in the educational seminar and also shared with the fellows their experience in the field of sustainable energy development. In the framework of the seminar Mr. Bekker made a presentation on Industrial energy management and ISO 50001. The presentation attracted fellows’ attention and provoked genuine interest. Mr. Dodonov shared with the audience the experience of establishment energy management information systems in the CIS with the support of international projects. Also, the UNDP TV crew visited ISEDC and made a news coverage on the implementation of the fellowships programme.

  On October 22, participants of the Fellowships programme visited the Russian Research Institute for Electrification of Agriculture (RRIEA). Director of RRIEA, academician Dr. Dmitry Strebkov welcomed fellows and familiarized with the main activities of departments and laboratories of the institute. Associate professor Dr. Igor Tyukhov arranged a tour to experimental laboratories and familiarized with the advanced developments of RRIEA. Fellows visited electrical agriculture equipment laboratory, laboratory of technology of photovoltaic cells and electronic devices, experimental technological laboratory of solar cells and laboratory of bio-energy installations. Also, the fellows visited the International UNESCO Chair “Renewable energy and rural electrification” located in RRIEA.

  On October 23, participants of the Fellowships programme attended the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MSUCE). The fellows had an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with the state of the art engineering developments of scientific and laboratory facilities of the university. During the MSUCE lab tour, the international fellows visited educational research and production laboratory of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic tests of building construction, scientific educational laboratory of engineering research and monitoring of building structures and Scientific Research Center «Translucent Structures». Advisor to Rector, Head of laboratory of intellectual systems in construction Dr. Artem Sedov familiarized students with scientific and educational Center for information systems and intellectual automation in construction. Dr. Sedov presented the peculiarities of intellectual systems and demonstrated the operation of the system by an example of the conference hall, equipped with all kinds of sensors and advanced devices. The fellows were introduced to the leading experts of MSUCE laboratories. Head of climatic tests laboratory, Dr. Stanislav Pashkevich arranged an excursion to the Research Institute of Building Materials and familiarized students with the research of durability and corrosion resistance of building materials and products.

  During the fourth week of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme fellows will have an opportunity to be introduced to the ISEDC and PFUR experts in order to take part in seminar organized by ISEDC. Also, in the framework of the programme fellows will visit the International Congress "Renewable Energy XXI century: energy and economic efficiency - REENCON XXI" and the largest Russian forum and exhibition of innovation "Open Innovations".

• The IX session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme - 2015 finished in Moscow

  During the last fourth week of training (October 26-30), fellows of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme visited Russian and international exhibitions and congresses and presented their course works.
  
  On October 26, a scientific and educational seminar took place at the International Sustainable Energy Development Centre under the auspices of UNESCO (ISEDC), in the framework of the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme "Effective Use of Energy Resources".

  The main emphasis of the seminar was made on relevant issues within the framework of the programme, such as energy saving and conservation, renewable energy, environmental protection, development of cooperation in the field of energy technologies, strengthening the international human capacity development in the energy sector. The event was supervised by the leading ISEDC experts, in particular Deputy Executive director Mr. Vladimir Berdin, Director of Department of strategic planning and partnership Mr. Ilya Kramarenko and Chief of educational sector Mr. Aleksandr Antonov. During the seminar experts shared their experience in the field of energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies and sustainable energy development. They also held interactive lectures and organized communication panels to discuss topical issues within the educational course. Fellows thanked the ISEDC experts for conducting very informative seminar and interesting lectures.

  On October 27, fellows visited International Congress "Renewable Energy XXI century: energy and economic efficiency REENCON XXI". The event was devoted to the development of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems in Russia and interstate associations with the participation of Russia, and also the Congress aimed at consolidating the efforts of scientists, engineers, representatives of expert and the business community, educational institutions, as well as the all levels of legislative and executive authorities in Russia, the EAEC and CIS to promote the major trend in the development of efficient and clean energy sector – creation of energy supply systems based on the comprehensive utilization of renewable energy and intellectual elements of active-adaptive grid (including energy storage systems). The fellows had an excellent opportunity to meet with leading Russian and foreign experts, participate in the Congress debates and establish business ties with the scientific community.

  On October 28, the group of international fellows visited annual forum and exhibition "Open Innovations". The forum is a global discussion platform that is dedicated to emerging technologies and furthering innovation prospects and collaboration worldwide. On the official invitation of organizers of the annual forum and exhibition “Open Innovations” fellows of the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme were invited to participate in the event. International fellows were accompanied at the forum and exhibition by the ISEDC Chief of Educational sector Mr. Aleksandr Antonov and the ISEDC expert of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources Mr.Mikhail Lyalin. The events, concerned with innovation technologies for energy development, new approaches to global education and modern methods of energy conservation, arose great interest among fellows. They actively participated in discussions on innovative technologies, energy saving and effective energy consumption, and also visited a large-scale international exhibition presented by advanced products and technologies of the Russian and international companies. The majority of topics of the exhibition were related to the main subject of the Fellowships Programme – effective use of energy resources.

  On October 29, an examination seminar took place at the Ecological faculty of People's Friendship University of Russia. The expert committee consisted of faculty study director Mrs.Olga Rodionova, applied ecology chairman Dr.Margarita Redina, faculty lecturer Ms.Yelizaveta Anikina and Chief of ISEDC Educational sector Mr.Aleksandr Antonov. During the seminar fellows presented their course works on situations and prospects of energy development in their countries and recorded video appeal to all further participants of the fellowships programme. The exchange of knowledge, experience and information was mutually useful for both parties – lecturers and fellows.

  On October 30, the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme for specialists from developing countries and countries in transition was ended up by the graduation ceremony of awarding certificates. The ceremony was attended by Mr.Yury Posysaev, ISEDC Executive Director; Mrs.Nataliya Chernyk, Dean of the Ecological faculty of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia; Dr. Margarita Redina, Head teacher of the education programme; Mr.Alexander Antonov, Chief of ISEDC Educational sector; and Mr.Mikhail Lyalin, expert of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources sector at ISEDC. Mr.Posysaev congratulated the graduates with the completion of the training course and wished everyone success in further professional activities. Mrs.Chernykh told about the present and future prospects of the Ecological faculty and invited fellows to continue their professional training at the faculty as Ph.D. students. Upon the end of closing speech, Mr.Posysaev and Mrs.Chernykh awarded fellows with certificates of completion of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme and expressed their hope for further cooperation. International fellows, in their turn, returned thanks to  management, lecturers and experts of ISEDC and PFUR for organizing hospitable conditions of their stay in Moscow and their participation in the 9th session of the UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme.
